Junior League of Louisville and the Cancer Mobile

In 1947 the Junior League of Louisville purchased the first ever Mobile Cancer Unit for $16,000.  It was equipped with radiology equipment and a laboratory that would help detect cancer.  The unit was presented to the Kentucky Division or the American Cancer Society and was used to visit areas remote from hospitals and serve as a complete diagnostic unit for cancer detection.

In a letter dated January 11, 1951, it was stated that the Cancer Mobile “continues to be one of the greatest educational efforts in rural Kentucky.”  It goes on to say “We know of no group that has given more unstintedly of their time or has done more to assist in our programs of education and service.”
