What is the Little Black Dress Initiative? The Junior League of Louisville is excited to bring the Little Black Dress Initiative to our community. LBDI asks participants to wear the same black dress for five days to adDRESS the issue of generational poverty in our community.

1 in 5 Louisville Children live in Poverty. These 38,000 children would fill 2 KFC Yum! Centers OR 3 Slugger Fields .  Alleviating the impacts of childhood poverty would increase a child’s income by an average of $9,300 annually throughout adulthood.

Poverty is experienced in multiple forms: Quality of Place, Health, and Jobs

Education:  The Junior League of Louisville’s community projects focus specifically on education in our community.  Educational disparities affect parents’ earning potential, job stability, and the ability to support their children’s education.  Only 43% of students who receive free and reduced priced lunch are considered to be Kindergarten ready as compared to 71% of their peers.  The Junior League has brought Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to the city of Louisville, in partnership wit Wave3 News, giving children the opportunity to receive one free book each month from birth until age 5, entirely for free.

The Junior League of Louisville’s commitment to education does not end with Kindergarten readiness.  The Junior League of Louisville is committed to improving the success of every student through projects and partnerships with Boys and Girls Haven, Maryhurst, Family Scholar House, West End School, Blessings in a Backpack, Girl Scouts, Uspiritus, and Lemonade Day.
